Cracking the HR Round“YAYY! I have cleared the technical round, now the HR round is going to be a cakewalk.” Doesn’t this sound familiar? Candidates, freshers especially, tend to take the HR round lightly. However, it is just as important as any other round of your interview. Through the HR round, companies screen your personality to gauge your mindset, values, etc. Thus, it serves as a contributing factor in deciding if you’re the right candidate for the job.

So, here are some tips that can help you clear your first HR round and land you that dream job:

Go beyond your resume:

One of the most asked questions by an HR interviewer is, “Tell us more about yourself”. When you are asked to speak about yourself, don’t tell them things that are already on your CV. They have already read that and are curious to know what more you have to offer. Speak of your interests, professional and personal values, and other aspects that give them an insight into your personality. Letting them know that you scored 85% is not as interesting as letting them know that you love hiking. The HR round is more about conversations; it is designed to understand how well you articulate and present yourself.

Let your attire speak for you:

Don’t we all know the importance of being well-dressed at an interview? This is the first time you are going to meet the HR manager and you want to make a statement. Remember, first impressions last. One of the easiest ways of creating a good impression is by dressing well. You don’t have to wear branded clothes or an expensive blazer. However, your dressing must be tidy, decent, and must compliment your personality. It must also be in sync with the overall company culture. For instance, if you are going to be working in a company where everyone turns up in casuals, don’t turn up in a t-shirt and jeans but do invest in a pair of smart casuals.

Do your homework:

Just the way you prepare before your technical round of interview, it is important to do your homework before your first HR round. By reading about the organization and its operations, you can show how prepared and keen you are about the job opportunity. But remember, if you haven’t read about the company, don’t bluff your way through the interview. Chances are that the HR manager knows that you’re not being honest. And despite clearing the technical round, you may fail this one and not bag the job. In such a scenario, be transparent and show a keenness to learn more about the organization.

Don’t be something you’re not:

Be honest. HR managers have an innate ability to see through things and know when a person is lying or pretending to be someone they are not. It’s your first HR interview, but not theirs. Therefore, be as open and honest as you can. Let the conversations be natural. Most importantly, if you do not have an answer to a question, don’t shy away from accepting it. Let them know that you don’t know. It is better than lying.

Ask questions:

The HR round is usually a two-way street where your interviewer will encourage you to ask questions. If you have any doubts regarding your job responsibilities, work culture, or anything else, now is the time to ask. However, you must be polite and must wait until they give you a chance to ask.

Be relevant:

When you’re asked about your strengths and weaknesses, be relevant. While one of your strengths may be that you’re a great batsman, in this context, it’s irrelevant. So be relevant while answering questions.

When you’re prepared, you are more confident. And when you’re confident, even the tough doesn’t seem tough, isn’t it? So the key to crack your first HR interview is to be prepared and confident. Goodluck!
